Richard Lorber's keen eye and business savvy (see IBOTW 01.19.01) has landed him the seemingly ubiquitous title of Industry Babe of the Week for a second time. And for good reason. Marking the twentieth anniversary of his highly successful enterprise Fox Lorber and a five-year stretch as Co-Chairman of Winstar TV & Video and Winstar Cinema, Richard has launched a new company with a business acumen that would make TCI's John Malone green with envy. As a business development company, the newly initiated Lorber Media will serve to engage entertainment and media companies in advisory services with specific attention to smaller and mid-sized firms. Why smaller companies, you ask? Aren't you sick of the world being dominated by a handful of media conglomerates? I smell a revolution brewing. Lately, smaller companies are being gobbled up by the big guns (got Yahoo?) Lorber Media stands to change that perception (read: you can't own the Internet, Steve Case). By re-aligning their resources and giving these small companies the competitive advantage they need, Richard and his associates are looking to invest in several organizations where a strong symbiosis of vision is evident. Lorber Media will thereby create "chemistry" between these firms and strengthen their scalability. Companies that have an engaged distribution level for original content (in either traditional or new media) will be sought. A focus on differentiation of products and services that are unique is key. As unique as Lorber himself.
